About the Event

Scholarly communication: Reframing the dialogue

Scholarly communication encompasses various aspects. It can be about publishers, it can be about publishing, but ultimately it is about making sure that thoroughly research outcomes effectively reach those who rely on them: researchers, policymakers, industry professionals and practitioners. The means used to achieve this goal are continually evolving, with the rate of change consistently increasing. Does the future of scholarly communication lie in the foundations of our past, in the dynamics of our present, or within uncharted territories?

When

14 & 15 January 2025

ESMT Berlin, Schlossplatz 1, 10178 Berlin, Germany

Monday , 13 January 2024, 14:00 - 17:00

The aim of this workshop, where Early Career Researchers will take center stage in a fruitful dialogue with publishers, is to foster a deeper understanding of the present and facilitate future collaboration within evolving systems. Research is increasingly crucial in a changing world where ‘knowledge’ is readily available. Accurate and trusted communication of research outcomes is vital to ensure that further work builds upon a trusted corpus of knowledge. Given the role of publication in research assessment and careers, there is pressure to publish, necessitating fair and well-managed assessment. In a series of group interviews and discussions, we will explore the question: How can the scholarly publishing community assist ECRs on their journey to publication?

About The Event Organizer

The Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP) is a not-for-profit organization under German law founded in 2020 and dedicated to bringing publishers, researchers, funders, and policymakers together. Starting with the 2021 edition, BISP is the organizer of the Academic Publishing in Europe (APE) Conference.
BISP organized the past APE Conferences side to side with the founder of this yearly event, Arnoud de Kemp, who is responsible for curating the annual exchange of information between publishers, researcher institutions, libraries, universities, and decision-makers at local, national and EU level since 2006.
Next to the organization of the APE Conferences, BISP will develop and run seminars and workshops for early-career researchers, early-career publishers, and early-career professionals.
The purpose is to bring these groups together to ensure that key stakeholders in the research ecosystem develop a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities that they face together and separately.
