Dear friends of APE,
When I was asked to take on the role of Director of APE, I didn’t have to think about it for very long.
Anyone who has spent time in this community knows what APE is, and what it isn’t. Held each January in Berlin, APE is where the defining debates of the previous year meet the decisions and actions that will shape the new one. It is a conference in which I have participated and presented myself, and one for which I have great affection, not least because of its founder Arnoud de Kemp and its home at the Berlin Institute of Scholarly Publishing.
I have already started working with the APE community and building the Programme Committee for the 2027 conference. We recently held our kick-off meeting, bringing together both familiar faces and new voices from within, and beyond, our traditional community. The conversation was full of energy – a sign of what’s to come.
As many of you know, I have been part of this wider ecosystem for almost 35 years, working across many different parts of it: with researchers, libraries, publishers, technology providers, funders, policymakers, and beyond. I am excited and honored to bring this network and experience to APE, to build on what makes it special and to reinforce its role. APE is the place where our community comes together to make sense of change and navigate what comes next.
My ambition for APE 2027 is simple: that you leave Berlin with sharper insight into where things are heading, having heard perspectives from beyond our own sector, and with practical ideas you can take back into your daily work. And that you leave having had the kind of honest, open conversations this community does better than anyone.
So don’t miss it. Save the date and join us for APE 2027. I look forward to seeing you in Berlin on 11-13 January 2027.
